Beliefs Run Deeper Than Behavior

As a Psychologist and Hypnotherapist, I see this often:

People come in trying to change a habit—overeating, overworking, overthinking—without realizing that the root of the habit is identity-based.

Subconscious beliefs like:

  • “If I stop striving, I’ll be rejected.”
  • “My needs aren’t as important as others’.”
  • “Calm is dangerous because something bad always follows.”

These aren’t flaws. They’re survival strategies learned through experience, repetition, and reinforcement.

And until they’re updated, your nervous system will fight even the most positive change.

How to Surface Hidden Beliefs

Start here—gently and curiously.

Track the Trigger
What moment flips you into overdrive? Is it an email, a request, a mistake?

Name the Narrative
What do you hear internally in that moment?
(“I messed up again,” “They’ll think I’m lazy,” “I don’t have time to rest.”)

Ask the Deeper Question
Where did I first learn this response?
Who modeled it for me?
What did it protect me from?

These questions uncover the “script” you’re still running.

Awareness is the first interruption.

Try This Rewiring Sequence

🌀 Belief Reframe Practice (5 minutes)

  1. Settle In
    Sit quietly, slow your breath, and bring to mind a recent moment of stress or overwork.
  2. Hear the Script
    What belief came up underneath the surface?
    Write it down.
  3. Reframe with Compassion
    Say out loud:
“That belief helped me survive. I don’t need it to thrive.”
“I am allowed to succeed without self-pressure.”
“I belong—even when I rest.”

-Visualize the Shift
Imagine yourself living from this new belief.
Feel it in your body. Let that version of you take up space.
